Healthy Management of Kidney Stones in Central Florida

A Woman is Holding her Stomach in Pain — Orlando, FL — Central Florida Kidney Specialists

Central Florida Kidney Specialists only staffs the best nephrologists for our patients in Central Florida. Kidneys are all we do, and managing kidney stones is a large part of our successful patient treatments. Kidney stones develop from the buildup (crystallization) of salts and minerals, usually within the kidney. As the crystals enlarge into stones, they may either adhere to the kidney itself or travel to other sites within the urinary tract. In addition to severe, intense pain, kidney stones can cause bleeding, infection, and urinary obstruction.

Specialized Evaluation & Testing for Kidney Stones

Urologists and primary care providers refer their patients to kidney stone management at Central Florida Kidney Specialists (CFLKS) in the Central Florida area to evaluate kidney stone activity and coordinate and perform outpatient lab studies. During this evaluation, our kidney specialists will also determine if you have one or more of the risk factors for kidney stones, which include:

  • Family or personal history
  • Dehydration or insufficient water intake
  • High amounts of protein, sodium, or salt in the diet
  • Obesity
  • Digestive diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
  • Gastric bypass surgery or other types of bowl surgeries
  • Specific medical conditions, such as renal tubular acidosis, cystinuria, hyperparathyroidism & others

Kidney Stones Signs & Symptoms

Kidney stones can develop without causing symptoms until they move around within the kidney or pass from the kidney into the ureter on the way to the bladder. When that occurs, you could experience any of a variety of symptoms that are often the initial (and unforgettable) signs that you have a kidney stone. These include:

  • Severe pain in the side & back
  • Pain radiating to the lower abdomen & groin
  • Pain when urinating
  • Pink, red, brown, cloudy or foul-smelling urine
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Persistent need to urinate or more frequent urination
  • Reduced urine output

Avoid or Resolve Kidney Stones With Help from Central Florida Kidney Specialists

To prevent kidney stones from reoccurring, Central Florida Kidney Specialists nephrologists in our Central Florida kidney stone management programs will likely recommend specific diet modification, increased fluid intake, and sometimes medications. You may be successful in expelling the kidney stone through the urinary tract. However, our kidney doctors may recommend surgery to remove the stone if it:

  • Blocks the flow of urine
  • Causes an infection
  • Damages the kidney

For surgery to remove or fragment the stone, CFLKS nephrologists will refer you to a urologist. For more about kidney stone management, call us today at (407) 472-5110.
